Holden launches new app for VF Ute

Get the feel behind the wheel of Holden's 'record-breaking' Ute – from your smartphone
Holden fans can get behind the virtual wheel of the new VF SS-V Redline Ute and set their own world record on a track very much like – but not quite – the Nürburgring ring.
The idea is to go up against the times set by Holden’s own world record driver Rob Trubiani, who set some blistering times around the famous circuit in June this year.
For the record, Trubiani set a time of 8 minutes 19.47 seconds in the VF Redline.
Free on iOS and Android, the game features four challenging stages as players race against Rob’s ghost car, which demonstrates the best lines through the course. Bragging rights are up for grabs with the top 200 times for each stage posted on the global leader board.
Kristian Aquilina, Marketing Manager, said the game was designed to entertain a younger audience with engaging content.
“Today’s driver wants to be entertained, not marketed to. We wanted to give fans a small taste of what it is like to get behind the wheel of Australia’s ultimate sporting machine on a challenging circuit.
“Initially we released the first stage to see if there was an appetite for the game in the market place. We received an overwhelmingly positive response from fans and added three more stages and the leader board functionality. So far we’ve had over 21,000 downloads.
“The graphics feature realistic driving dynamics, handling and the awesome sound of the VF SS-V Redline Ute on full throttle."
Well, realistic driving dynamics is a bit of a stretch as you tilt steer the Ute through the well rendered race track.   The German countryside is somewhat low in detail, but nicely presented, with three camera angles a bonus in a game such as this.
Sound wise the SS-V does come across somewhat gutless through the iPhone standard speaker.
Furthermore aficionados of virtual racing games will be aghast that the control options are fixed (including auto down-shifting as corners approach).  But for those just looking to add some flavour to their Facebook timelines, or simply while away some minutes trying to perfect digital drive lines, this is a free app worth having a quick look at.
World Record Ute is free and requires compatible devices running iOS4 and above for Apple devices or Android Gingerbread and above.
