The concept of handouts to help save a beleaguered economy is catching on.
First it was the Rudd government, now it's Holden picking up on the theme in order to move more metal.
The 'Holden Owners Grant' selects out a few specific models from the local range and quotes prices that are as variable as reserve bank interest rates.
Details appear on the official Holden website and are aimed at "helping more Australians afford a new Holden".
The package picks up on current sensitivities to convince would-be buyers they are getting something special.
The Owners Grant can mean simply a reduction in the RRP, a reduced driveaway price or, in one case, the throwing in of a free tray for your ute.
The range of Holdens benefitting from the "grant" covers the entry-level Barina, sub-$20,000 Viva, Astra, Epica diesel, volume-selling Commodore sedan, Sportwagon and ute, Captiva SUV and Colorado utes.
The savings range from a minimum $2800 (Barina) to a significant $11,800 (2008-build Colorado).
The following list, with some disclaimers about metallic paint (not included in the quoted RRP); the actuality of the grant (grant value including allowance for driveaway component when registering a vehicle in Victoria, and a reminder that registration and stamp duty vary from state to state) appears on the Holden website:
