GM Holden will launch an updated MY15 Commodore line-up in Sydney on October 9, ahead of its expected release in November – the same month Ford Australia's final Falcon range goes on sale. Precise details remain under wraps, but we understand next month's Commodore upgrade will primarily bring colour, trim and minor technical changes less than 18 months after the VF Commodore's launch.
Two new metallic paint hues – Some Like It Hot (a deep cherry red) and Jungle Fever (olive green) – will join the Commodore colour palette, replacing Karma (mid blue) and Fantale (vivid orange).
Motoring.com.au has also learned that Commodore Sportwagon models will no longer be available with a manual transmission or Alchemy (purple) paint, although a new selection of wheel designs could be offered.
Inside, a high-resolution rear-view camera will bring active reversing guidelines, and similar cosmetic and technical changes are expected to be announced for HSV models later in October.
It is also possible that premium sports versions of the MY15 Commodore could become available with the steering wheel paddle shifters and shark-fin antenna already fitted to the Commodore-based Chevrolet SS sports sedan exported to the US.
The same models could also be offered with the magnetic ride control system already fitted to the Commodore-based HSV GTS flagship, which could also donate its head-up display system to top-end SS models.
Each car will be 'hand finished' and 'individually numbered' by the Holden Enhancement Centre at its Elizabeth factory in Adelaide, and offered with a framed certificate to match the build plate.
Holden says the Lowndes special will also come with 'money can't buy' enticements, including an invite to a Lowndes-hosted Red Bull function and two pit passes to your closest V8 Supercars event.
Full details of the Lowndes special are yet to be released, but some of its additions could be reserved for the Commodore's MY16 facelift due around October next year.
As the last upgrade before Australian production ceases for good two years later in 2017, the midlife Series II or Z-Series makeover for the VF Commodore, which went on sale in June last year, is expected to bring more significant changes.
However, rumours of substantial engineering upgrades – such as HSV's 6.2-litre LS3 V8 for the Commodore SS and the latest Corvette's new GM Gen 5 LT1 direct-injection V8 for HSV – are likely to remain just that.
Commodore sales are up almost 33 per cent to August this year with more than 21,000 sold, while Holden Ute sales are up 8.5 per cent to nearly 4000.
Meantime, Falcon sedan and ute sales continue to be down by about a third, with a little over 6500 combined sales.
