Holden reinvents the (spare) wheel

Commodore buyers are now able to choose between a full-size spare or an inflator kit

Holden Commodore customers are able to decide -- at no added cost -- whether to specify a full-size spare tyre or a space-saving inflator kit.

The running change to Commodore sedan and Sportwagon models comes as Holden drops the previous space-saver spare that has drawn criticism from both the press and new-car buyers.

Both Holden and Ford moved away from full-size spares in their volume-selling Commodores and Falcons in 2007, adopting space-saver spares amid cries of foul from public and press.

According to Holden, the Commodore's inflator kit solves the problem of how best to maximise load space.

"After understanding the benefits the tyre inflator kit could provide some motorists we were keen to make this option available.  However, we do realise that this may not be a practical solution for all motorists and therefore a full size spare wheel will be made available to those who require this feature", said Kate Lonsdale, Product Communications Manager -- Holden and Global RWD, at GM Holden Ltd.

"For customers who live in rural areas and/or are comfortable with changing a tyre if a puncture occurs, a full size steel spare wheel will be available as a no-cost option. A full size alloy spare wheel will be provided as a no-cost on Sportwagon Calais V-Series and SS-V Series," she said.

"It's about providing customers choice to allow them to tailor their vehicle to meet their priorities."
