Holden reveals 2018 Commodore specs and pricing

GM Holden has announced pricing and specifications for its all-new, imported 2018 Commodore line-up that goes on sale in late February.

Along with three body styles (liftback, wagon and crossover), three engines (2.0-litre turbo petrol and diesel, and petrol V6) and one transmission (nine-speed auto), Holden has now confirmed six equipment grades – entry-level LT, Calais, Calais-V, RS, RS-V and VXR.

However, the Sportwagon is not available in Calais or VXR forms, and the high-riding Tourer is only available in Calais spec.

The headline act of the 15-variant, German-made ZB Commodore line-up is a $33,690 (plus on-road costs) starting price, for the entry-level front-wheel drive 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder liftback.

Holden points out that’s $1800 less than its entry-model predecessor, the homegrown VFII Commodore Evoke sedan, but it’s also $1200 more than what should be its closest competitor, the mid-size Mazda6 sedan (from $32,490).

The base LT liftback petrol is also being offered for $35,990 drive-away ($3935 less than its predecessor), and a diesel power costs $3000 extra on the base model, the Calais liftback and the LT wagon – but not the all-wheel drive Tourer V6 crossover.

Apart from the latter and the VXR liftback, the V6 AWD powertrain is also available in RS and RS-V liftback form (priced from $40,70 or $42,490 drive-away) and in Sportwagon RS-V guise ($49, 190 plus ORCs).

Holden’s Executive Director of Marketing, Mark Harland, said Commodore firsts will include AWD, Adaptive LED Matrix headlights, 360-degree camera and heated/cooled massage seats.

Many of these features are reserved for the RS-V sports and Calais V luxury flagships, but all ZB Commodores will come standard with autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane-keeping assist.

The SS-replacing VXR adds a 3.6-litre V6 with adaptive AWD, Continuous Damping Control suspension and front Brembo brakes.

“The next-generation Commodore is a stunning vehicle that’s already getting rave reviews in Europe in Opel Insignia guise,” he said.

“It looks sleek and sporty on the outside, while inside it’s refined and sophisticated with intelligent use of premium materials and a long list of user-friendly high-tech features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and wireless phone charging.

“As well as being able to access the range from just $35,990 on-the-road, customers are given peace of mind to test the car in their own time and see how well it fits in their daily lives with our Take Your Time test Drive.”

Holden is also keen to highlight nearly 150,000km of local testing – in particular V6 AWD models and focusing on a unique local suspension and steering tune and fine-tuning radio and satellite navigation reception – and unprecedented feedback from more than 400 potential customers.

“We’ve hosted over 400 customers at the Lang Lang proving ground in the last few months to show them the next-generation Commodore in development and get their feedback on how it drives,” said Holden’s Vehicle Development Manager, Jeremy Tassone.

“We’ve had a few skeptical people come for a drive but once they’ve been in the car and experienced the work the team has put in, they’ve left with huge smiles on their faces. It’s been great to see and be able to involve them.”
