Holden Volt still on track

Due late next year despite production delays

Australia’s first plug-in hybrid car – the Holden Volt – is still due in showrooms by this time next year despite production delays.

The vehicle sold as a Chevrolet in North America and the subject of the film ‘Revenge of the Electric Car’ was due to have its factory upgraded about now so that production could be quadrupled.

But the upgrade to the Detroit Hamtramck facility and the addition of a second shift has been postponed until the second half of next year.

The Volt production line has the capacity to build 16,000 cars per year at present but that figure will be boosted to 60,000 by the end of 2012.

Holden spokeswoman Emily Perry told Motoring.com.au: “There is no delay for Volt as far as we’re aware. We are already a confirmed program. To our knowledge there is no change to our launch date at this stage.”

Holden has not announced pricing of the Volt yet, but it is expected to be close to or in excess of $60,000.

The Volt can be driven for approximately 50km on battery power alone, after which time the petrol motor kicks in to provide a total of about 400km of driving range, the same as the average car.

It is built on the same line as the next generation Chevrolet Malibu mid-size sedan and a soon-to-be-discontinued Cadillac.
