Holden's Sportwagon gains reversing camera option

An optional rear-mounted camera for the VE Sportwagon is Holden's latest offering to tempt buyers in the large-car market segment

Holden has introduced a new reversing camera option for the VE Sportwagon. Adding $500 to the price of the base car, the camera outputs to a display inside the car -- either a full-colour screen for the upmarket Calais, Calais V-Series and SS V-Series or an in-mirror view for the lower-spec variants.

As all models are fitted with reverse-parking acoustic guidance, the new option enhances safety and reduces the possibility of doing panel damage while backing.

Holden's Director of Marketing, Philip Brook, described the new feature as "an essential tool for people who need to park in tight spaces or hitch their vehicle to a trailer, caravan or boat".

Brook noted also that the Sportwagon appeals to families with small children and the camera will help alert drivers to kids behind the car.

"Sportwagon has strong appeal to customers with young children where safety is a key priority in their decision to purchase a new car," said Brook.

The Sportwagon has, according to Holden, outsold SUVs since its launch a few months ago -- and the reversing camera is likely to be a popular option with buyers who are concerned about the safety aspects of owning an SUV.
