Honda Australia will bring its first fully electric vehicle to market in the second half of 2026 and will back that move up in 2027 with the local release of the futuristic 0 Series EV range.
Unveiled at CES 2024, the Honda 0 Series, anchored by the radical Saloon and SUV concepts, represents Honda’s most ambitious foray into the EV space yet, showcasing ultra-sleek styling, lightweight architecture and software-first engineering.
“We want them all,” Honda Australia automotive director Robert Thorp said when asked if the local division would adopt the full range of 0 Series vehicles.
“We are, at this moment, looking at all of them ... because it’s going to be the best of breed that’s available in the global Honda product portfolio.”
Honda Australia CEO Jay Joseph also confirmed the production-spec 0 Series will stay true to the concept when it hits the road.
“We introduced the evolution of the Saloon concept and a near production prototype of the 0 Series SUV, so that strong design direction is very much what those products will be like,” he said
Honda says it’s aware of increasing competition from new Chinese brands but believes its blend of heritage, product quality and customer care still sets it apart, even if its arrival to the EV scene comes later than some rivals.
“We have to be relevant today, no question about it,” Joseph said when discussing competition from cheaper Chinese EVs.
“People are attracted to the features and the flash and all of that, so we definitely have to be competitive on that front too.”
He added that Honda also recognises the need to embrace change in the electric era, and that the 0 Series represents a new design and innovation benchmark for the brand.
“We can’t just rest on our laurels and all the things that we achieved in the past.”
“With 0 Series, you can see a whole different direction and styling – a massive departure and taking chances with that.
“Maybe it doesn’t appeal to everybody, but for the people who it does appeal to, it’s really sexy, and that’s what we need.”
While the 0 Series isn’t due to arrive until 2027, the first electric model in 2026 is expected to be an existing EV in Honda’s portfolio, i.e. the e:Ny1 SUV currently on sale in the UK and New Zealand.
