You can no longer order a new Honda Civic Type R – or a Honda NSX, for that matter – but that doesn’t mean you can’t get your hands on the giant-killing hot hatch.
Click on the Type R link at Honda Australia’s public website and you’ll be told: “Due to higher than anticipated demand, the Civic Type R is currently not available to order.”
That’s different from Honda’s messaging as recently as January, when it advised prospective Type R buyers to check availability with their local dealer.
And it’s because every example bound for Australia has now been snapped up by customers or dealers before production ceases in July.
That reportedly includes two more shipments later this year from Honda UK’s Swindon plant, which will be closed next month, meaning these will be the final examples of the current Honda Civic Type R to come to Australia.
Officially, Honda Australia says new orders for the Type R closed in late 2020 – around the same time as the launch of the upgraded 2021 model in December and well before the first of just 20 local deliveries of the Type R Limited Edition were due to commence in April.
For the record, the standard Honda Civic Type R was last priced at $54,990 plus on-road costs, and the LE at $66,700 plus ORCs, or $70K drive-away.
The discontinuation of the Type R and NSX leaves Honda Australia with only the mainstream Civic hatch and sedan, as well as the HR-V, CR-V, Accord and Odyssey.
The Odyssey is the only one of its models to come from Japan rather than Thailand.
Honda has confirmed there will be a hot Type R version of the new 11th-generation Civic hatchback, which is due for Australian release in the second half of this year, but the next Civic sedan won’t be sold Down Under.
The new Honda Civic hatch is expected to again come to Australia from Thailand, but it’s not yet clear where Honda will produce the next Type R, which could morph into a 300kW hybrid hot hatch.
In the meantime, there are no fewer than 62 Honda Civic Type Rs listed at carsales, including eighth-generation examples priced from as little as $13,990.
Of the 38 current-generation Type Rs, the cheapest is an MY18 with 92,000km on the clock for $43,888.
And there are four brand-new MY21 Type Rs listed by dealers at carsales
