Honda has unveiled an updated Civic Type R for 2027, introducing chassis, cooling, technology and cabin improvements while retaining the hot hatch's existing 235kW/420Nm turbo-petrol powertrain. Revealed in the United States as the Civic Type R celebrates its 30th anniversary, the refreshed FL5-generation model is due in US showrooms this month, though Australian timing remains unconfirmed.

Honda has resisted the temptation to add more power to its flagship front-wheel-drive hot hatch, instead focusing the 2027 Civic Type R update on sharpening the driving experience.
The familiar turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine continues unchanged, producing 235kW and 420Nm. Drive remains exclusively sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential.
Under the skin, Honda says revised adaptive damper calibration in the car's most aggressive +R setting helps the Civic Type R follow road surfaces more accurately while reducing unwanted bouncing and harsh impacts.

The rev-matching system has also been recalibrated to respond more quickly during downshifts, while a new spring within the brake pedal linkage is designed to deliver a firmer, more direct pedal feel.
Exterior styling changes are deliberately subtle. A redesigned front bumper incorporates a larger grille opening to improve airflow and engine cooling, while a deeper front splitter is claimed to increase downforce at speed.
Buyers looking for a visual clue will need a keen eye, although a new Meteorite Gray Metallic paint option joins the existing Championship White, Boost Blue Pearl and Sonic Gray Pearl colours offered in the US market.

Inside, Honda has focused on improving day-to-day comfort.
The Type R's signature red suede sports seats are now heated for the first time, while suede trim extends across the dashboard and upper door panels.
A new diamond-pattern dashboard insert and darker finishes for interior metallic components further freshen the cabin.

Technology upgrades include Google Built-In functionality with Google Maps, Google Play Store access and Gemini AI assistance, alongside Alexa integration and two new USB-C ports.
Honda has also upgraded its Honda Sensing safety suite, with revised adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance systems, while automatic post-collision braking is now standard.
The refreshed Civic Type R is set to reach US dealerships during October 2026, with pricing starting from $US48,695 (approx. $A70,177) before destination charges.
Honda Australia has yet to confirm local timing or specifications, though the updated hot hatch is expected to arrive following its US launch.
Given the focus on chassis refinement, improved technology and enhanced comfort, the revised Civic Type R appears aimed at strengthening an already highly regarded performance hatch rather than reinventing it.
