Honda confirms NSX super hybrid for Oz
Local exec "thrilled" to make announcement, but offers no word on launch date or pricing yetHonda's latest generation NSX is coming to Australia – officially.
"We are absolutely thrilled to announce today that the NSX is coming to our shores," said Honda Australia Director Stephen Collins, quoted in a press release today. "It was a revolution when it was first launched back in 1990 and this generation aims even higher.
"The NSX has a rich history around the world and diehard fans of this supercar have been waiting a long time for the new model to come to production. We can't wait to offer this supercar to our customers."
Collins had previously told motoring.com.au that the NSX was a better-than-even chance to make it here, but now it's cast in concrete.
The latest model revives a name first applied to an all-aluminium exotic introduced over 20 years ago as a rival to established sports cars from famous European brands. 203 units of the original NSX were sold in the Asia/Pacific region up until 2005, when it was discontinued. Some of those cars would have gone to homes in Australia.
Powered by a direct-injection V6 mounted behind the cabin and featuring a dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive, the new NSX is a hybrid, equipped with two electric motors driving the front wheels and a third motor integrated with the transmission to provide supplemental torque for stronger acceleration. The electric motors driving the front wheels are part of the SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) system to provide what Honda describes as 'bilateral torque' adjustment. In effect, the motors can spin in either direction to balance the car's handling. Honda claims that the system is "unmatched by previous AWD systems."
The new NSX made its debut as an Acura at the Detroit motor show back in January, but took a bow in Frankfurt this month, wearing Honda badges in public for the first time.
