Honda fields new EV for Pikes Peak
The world's best known hillclimb will see a new zero-emissions challenger from Honda this weekendHonda will introduce a new electric-driven racer for this weekend's Pikes Peak hillclimb – and the vehicle, supported by Honda's luxury arm Acura, draws its inspiration from the NSX sports car.
Named the NSX EV, for that very reason, the vehicle will compete in the Electric Modified Class for this year's event. At the helm will be Tetsuya Yamano, the driver of Honda's CR-Z-based entry in last year's event.
Last year, Yamano won the Pikes Peak Challenge Exhibition Class.
“We’ve been tuning the car for several weeks at Pikes and have advanced its performance significantly,” said Yamano. “We’re honored to be running at Pikes in this historical, anniversary year – an event respected by racing fans all over the world.”
Compared with the earlier car, the NSX EV develops three times the output, and pushes it all out through a four-motor system, offering the same level of all-wheel drive grip for the newcomer. Honda claims that the NSX EV provides the driver with “true four-wheel torque vectoring”, all overseen by stability control, electric power steering and Honda's Sport Hybrid SH-AWD technology.
Pikes Peak poses a unique challenge for any EV, which has to contend with 156 corners along the route's 19.9km length and at altitudes ranging from the start line at 2862m to the finish 4302m.
The event kicks off on June 26.
