Honda hints at reborn S2000 sports car

Special new Honda sports car could be rolled out as part of Japanese car-maker’s 75th anniversary

Honda could be planning to celebrate its 75th anniversary with a long-awaited follow-up to the Honda S2000 roadster.

Speaking to Autocar, Honda’s European vice-president Tom Gardner said “watch this space” when asked what Honda had in store for its 75th birthday, adding “we had the S2000 at 50”.

Further fuelling rumours a sports car could be added to the range as soon as late this year, Gardner said: “We love performance, and we’re grateful for the strong reaction we’ve had to the latest Type R.”

When asked to clarify his remarks, the senior Honda exec refused to disclose anything further.

Back in 2020, rumours surfaced that a replacement for the high-revving Porsche Boxster rival was in development, sharing the proportions of the first-generation Honda roadster but packing a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder from the latest Honda Civic Type R.

Since then, little has been heard of the program, with not even an engineering mule spotted testing on the road.

If Honda rolls out a new-generation S2000, expect it to feature an advanced electrified powertrain for it to stand a chance of selling in Europe on the eve of the introduction of stricter EU regulations controlling emissions.

Another possibility is an all-electric successor to the Honda NSX, following the second-generation supercar’s market exit last year.

Other pundits have suggested Honda could unwrap a GT-style model, following confirmation a coupe is among the 30 EVs the company plans to introduce globally by 2030.
