Honda Australia has announced a starting price of just $22,650 plus on-road costs for its ninth-generation Civic hatch, which goes on sale here next month, representing a base price saving of $7340 over the model it replaces.
In fact, while the outgoing Civic Si hatch was available from $29,990, when launched in Australia in 2009 it was priced from $38,990 – at least $16,000 more than the starting price of the new model, which continues to be built in the UK.
Also available for $24,990 drive-away, the Civic VTi-S manual will be released alongside an automatic variant priced at $24,950 plus ORCs, or $27,290 drive-away.
The expanded two-variant Civic hatch line-up will be topped by the VTi-L automatic, priced at $29,990 plus ORCs but powered by the same upgraded 104kW/174Nm 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.
The five-speed manual VTi-S returns combined fuel consumption of 6.1 litres per 100km, while both five-speed automatic models return 6.5L/100km.
Honda’s sharp new Civic hatch pricing makes the Japanese brand’s small five-door hatchback just $1660 more expensive than the new Civic sedan at base level, following the latter’s recent local launch with a $22,990 starting price.
It also means that for the first time in a decade, Honda Australia will offer a volume-selling Civic hatch that is priced to compete with its direct rivals in the Ford Focus, Holden Cruze, Mazda3, Subaru Impreza, Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Golf and Nissan’s upcoming Pulsar.
On top of the VTi-S’s standard equipment, VTi-L buyers score leather upholstery, heated front seats and Bluetooth audio streaming. Full specifications will be revealed at the local launch of the Honda Civic hatch in June.
“The Civic hatch is great value for money, with a sleek new European design, improved aerodynamics and greater fuel efficiency,” said Honda Australia Director and General Manager of Sales and Marketing, Stephen Collins.
“The Honda Civic hatch is one of the most stylish cars in its segment, with a sleek, sporty design and sophisticated touches like the rear brake-light cluster. It prioritises safety and functionality with a five-star ANCAP safety rating and clever features including the unique to Honda, magic seat system.”
