Hot Polestar 2 BST Edition 270 revealed

Hard-core Polestar 2 EV gets 350kW of power and comprehensive chassis tweaks

Polestar has unwrapped a faster, better-handling all-electric Polestar 2 BST Edition 270 that narrows the performance and handling gap between it and cars like the combustion-powered BMW M3.

Sadly, for those in the market for a fast all-electric mid-size fastback that isn’t a Tesla, just 270 examples of the 2022 Polestar 2 BST Edition 270 will be produced globally and all are destined for Europe, the US or China.

Claimed to be based on the one-off Polestar 2 Experimental concept that was built for the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the special Polestar 2 gets the biggest 78kWh battery along with the latest power upgrades that have been recently introduced as a $1600 option for Australian owners.

Producing 50kW and 20Nm more than standard, the faster dual-motor Polestar 2 churns out 350kW and 680Nm – enough for a brisk 4.4-second 0-100km/h dash.

As well as more power, it’s claimed the two motors have been tuned to deliver “heightened responsiveness”, suggesting a sharpened throttle.

But the headline news is how engineers have honed the handling of the Polestar 2.

In comes specially developed Ohlins two-way adjustable dampers that can be tweaked by owners with manual adjustments under the frunk.

A new front strut bar and 20 per cent stiffer springs all round also signal the complete rethink when it comes to the regular Polestar 2’s chassis tune, which sees the EV now sit 25mm lower to the ground.

Riding on new 21-inch rims, engineers have also worked with Pirelli to develop a stickier bespoke 245/35-section P Zero tyre.

The standard (and already powerful) four-piston Brembo brakes remain.

The result, Polestar claims, is its “most dynamic electric driver’s car yet”.

Order a 2022 Polestar 2 BST Edition 270 and just two exterior colours are available – Thunder grey metallic or Snow white with a contrasting Charcoal WeaveTech trim.

Unlike the standard models, the sportier EV gets body-coloured bumpers and side skirts plus the further option of either a matte black central body stripe or a full-body Battleship Gray satin wrap.

Whatever colour you choose, each limited-edition gets gloss black mirror caps and Swedish Gold hue brake callipers, dampers, valve caps and seat belts.

There’s no word on how the WLTP-verified 480km range has been affected by the upgrades, if at all, nor whether or not any of the Polestar 2 BST Edition 270 will be imported Down Under.

If a small batch does make it, expect a hefty premium over the $73,400 (plus ORCs) charged for the regular Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor.

Commenting on the new special, Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said: “We had a great reaction to the specially modified Polestar 2 we showed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2021 and the response made it clear – we should create a version like that for production.”
