How Mercedes-AMG is charging into a new era of performance cars

Since it was first launched in 1967 and, more recently since it became an official subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz, AMG has built some of the most legendary, and luxurious, performance cars on the planet.

Times are changing and the automotive industry is experiencing its most significant transformation since the invention of the first automobile. Performance vehicles are no exception. At the forefront of this shift, Mercedes-AMG is pioneering advanced technologies to redefine and evolve its performance cars for the future.

The Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 re-sets the benchmark for speed, space and serenity in mid-sized performance cars. Available as either a conventional sedan or as a five-seater SUV, the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 quite literally fast forwards the future of electrified performance vehicles.

As it has always done, AMG builds on the foundations of standard Mercedes-Benz models with enhanced performance, dynamics and technology. And the EQE 53 continues that tradition.

Based on the regular EQE sedan and SUV, the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+ , to give it the full name, features a dual electric motor configuration that produces up to 460kW of power and a staggering 950Nm of torque, giving it the capability of sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 3.5 seconds (as a sedan, and 3.7 seconds as an SUV). To put that in perspective, the EQE 53 sedan is only a fraction of a second slower to triple figures than the fastest, most powerful road-going machine to ever wear the three-pointed star, the million-dollar AMG GT-R Black Series.

You can, of course, reduce that gap even further with an optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package that increases the outputs to up to 505kW and 1000Nm, and drops the 0-100km/h sprint to a face-bending 3.3 seconds.

All of that performance doesn’t compromise the everyday useability of the EQE models.

Both the sedan and SUV are equipped with a 90.56kWh lithium-ion battery pack, positioned between the front and rear axles for optimal weight distribution. It delivers a tested NEDC maximum driving range of 515km (EQE 53 sedan) and 485km (EQE 53 SUV), which allows for plenty of driving around town and long-distance cruising without running out of charge.

With 400V charging capacity, the EQE is almost as quick to recharge as it is to drive as the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80 percent in 32 minutes when using a DC fast charger above 170kW.

All that power would be wasted if it couldn’t be harnessed properly by the vehicle’s chassis set-up, which is another hallmark trait of all AMGs.

Both the sedan and SUV ride on an advanced AIRMATIC suspension configuration called AMG RIDE CONTROL+ that provides distinctly different driving characters across its multiple drive modes, from plush comfort in the default setting to razor-sharp cornering abilities in Sport+.

The dual-motor set-up not only delivers effortless performance, but the added security of all-wheel drive traction to further enhance its dynamic ability.

Added to that, the EQE 53 models feature rear-wheel steering. This system works in two ways to improve the vehicle’s agility: at low speeds, the rear wheels steer in the opposite direction to the front to make it more manoeuvrable in tight spaces, such as carparks and narrow urban streets; while at higher speeds, the rear wheels steer in the same direction, up to 3.6 degrees on the sedan and 10 degrees on the SUV , to increase stability and improve cornering. Really, you don’t need to know it is there, and it’s so progressive that it is invisible, but it works a treat and creates a car that defies its size and weight and feels much nimbler and more progressive than its on-paper specifications suggest.

Another AMG signature is the subtle yet distinctive design details that separate them from regular Mercedes-Benz models.

From the outside, both the AMG EQE 53 sedan and SUV feature a number of exclusive elements that enhance their sporting profile while also helping to improve the dynamic character of the car, including a unique black ‘Panamericana’ front grille, individual rear valance, 21-inch (sedan) and 22-inch (SUV) lightweight alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres that have been specially developed for the EQE models, and a rear lip spoiler on the bootlid for the sedan.

Inside the cabin, occupants are treated to the ultimate in luxury and the latest in digital conveniences, with Nappa leather trim, sports seats with heating and ventilation for the driver and front passenger, woodgrain highlights, four-zone climate control and colour-adjustable ambient lighting. The highlight of the cabin is the MBUX Hyperscreen: a gently curved piece of glass merges three separate displays to look like a single entity, housing the central infotainment system, with Bluetooth connection, smartphone mirroring and Mercedes’ cutting-edge MBUX operating system with AI voice activation technology and Augmented Reality for Navigation.

Lastly, and just as critically, the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 models are equipped with an advanced suite of active safety systems and have achieved among the highest crash test scores with a maximum five-star rating from the independent safety authority, ANCAP.

Among its myriad of features, the EQE 53 models include a range of semi-autonomous driver assistance functions such as automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane keeping assistance, blind spot warnings, traffic sign recognition and a 360-degree parking camera.
