HSV takes it to the top with LS3

As outlined last year and confirmed by the Carsales Network prior to the '08 Melbourne motor show, HSV will offer the GM-sourced LS3 V8 engine throughout the VE range, which includes Grange, Senator Signature, ClubSport R8, GTS and the Maloo R8 ute.

HSV today announced the LS3 V8 engine will be fitted across the line-up, for models on-sale from April.

The 6.2-litre V8 engine replaces the 6.0-litre LS2 unit, also sourced from GM North America. The increase in capacity to 6.2-litres brings a power boost from 307kW to 317kW -- enough to give HSV some breathing space over FPV's new FG-based models.

HSV claims a slight improvement in fuel consumption figures for the Maloo R8 and Grange. Fitted with the auto, the rest of the line-up uses slightly more -- 0.1L/100km, now 14.5L/100km -- with the LS3 engine.

The engine is fitted to the current Chevrolet Corvette and will also be used for the new Pontiac GXP, which was confirmed for US export this month. HSV says its models for sale in the UK and Middle East will be similarly equipped this year.

The new engine offering is a "welcome upgrade" to the HSV range, according to HSV's managing director Scott Grant.

"We know our customers want the latest and greatest technology in their cars," Grant said.

"The General Motors LS3 engine continues the HSV tradition of scouring the world for technological advancements to enhance the driving experience."

The Grange and Senator Signature will be offered in 'Red Hot' duco and a new 20-inch alloy wheel is available.

The LS3 engine shouldn't be confused with the V8 engine with AFM (active fuel management), which will be offered in the VE Commodore-based Pontiac G8. Appearing in the E85 biofuel compatible VE Sportwagon at last year's Sydney motor show, the AFM-equipped eight is claimed to offer fuel economy benefits in the region of 25 per cent.
