The husband and wife team of Helen and John Taylor may not be household names, but in fuel economy circles they're as famous as Peter Brock.
Over the years they've posted 46 new world records for fuel efficiency. In their latest feat of endurance, they're spending 38 days in a car together, driving a figure-eight loop of Australia in an endeavour to achieve fuel consumption that's 15 per cent better than the official manufacturer's figure for their Volkswagen Passat.
Sponsored by Caltex, the Taylors are departing from the Caltex Kingsway Star Mart in South Melbourne today. For the journey, the Taylors will run the Passat on 98 RON PULP.
They will conduct workshops in 21 different locations around the country, advising drivers how to get the most out of each drop of fuel. According to John Taylor economical driving for many drivers is more a black art than an exact science.
"For example, three quarters of Aussies are unaware that driving a manual will typically result in better fuel economy and a further 39 per cent mistakenly think mixing fuels in their vehicle will help them get more kilometres to the litre," he was quoted saying in a press release.
Research by Caltex has revealed that 96 per cent of Australians admit to the view they could drive more efficiently to save fuel. In the same survey, 53 per cent said they would like to learn how to save fuel while driving.
"We've helped thousands of drivers get more out of their fuel and set 46 world records for fuel efficiency across the world," John Taylor said.
"Today we're embarking on one of our biggest challenges yet: driving across the diverse terrain of Australia in a giant figure of eight.
"We want to show Australians the techniques for how to use less fuel and, in doing so, be kinder to our amazing environment.
"It doesn't matter whether the car you drive is big or small, it's the way you drive it that can help you get the most out of your fuel. It's an easy concept to learn and we love to share our knowledge with others whilst on the road."
The federal government has today named the Taylors 'Clean Air Champions' for their long-standing commitment to economical motoring.
