Well Hyundai might just have the technology you’re looking for. The ‘Digital Key’ allows users to unlock and start their Hyundai via an app on their smartphone replacing the need for remembering where you put your keys and whether you left them at home in your other pants.
So how does it work exactly? Using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, the car detects the authorised Digital Key-enabled phone. The NFC detectors are located in the front door handles as well as in the charging pod to start the car up so all you have to do is tap and go, literally.
The app can be used by up to four authorised people so the car will implement each user’s preferred setup including the position of mirrors, seats and the steering wheel, as well as audio, sat-nav and head-up display settings.
There are some future-thinking features of this technology too. The level of access to different vehicle functions can be tailored to each user with the owner’s ability to limit the use of certain features when renting the vehicle out, ride-share style. The tech can even be used to allow a courier to open the boot to deliver a parcel!
Hyundai aims to slowly roll the tech out into new cars later this year. Just remember to keep your phone charged and where you left it otherwise you and your car will be going nowhere.
