Hyundai developing Crab Walk for hard-core 4x4s
Korean brand readying advanced four-wheel steering for extreme off-roading for future electric carsHyundai Motor Corporation has been caught patenting an advanced four-wheel steering system to rival the GMC Hummer EV's Crab Walk.
Filing the patent for a "Method and System for Controlling In-Situ Rotation Mode of Four-Wheel Independent Steering Type Vehicle" with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the new tech has been designed to help future Hyundai, Kia and Genesis SUVs claw themselves out of the stickiest situations.
Next-gen models will also be able to rotate 180 degrees in the same position, making safe U-turns in the tightest conditions.
Parallel parking will also be a cinch thanks to the tech's 90-degree swivelling action that will see cars drive sideways into a space.
The same tech will also have the usual conventional advantages of boosting agility at low speed and stability at highway velocities.
According to the US patent, the tech will be controlled by an advanced ECU computer, with the driver able to use a switch located on the gear shifter to unlock the four-wheel steer's more advanced functions.
There's no indication when Hyundai will roll out its new tech but the evidence of a similar system on the latest Hummer EV suggests it won't be too far away.
