Hyundai IONIQ 5 is World Car of the Year

Korean brand collects three 2022 WCOTY awards alongside Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota

Hyundai is the big winner in the 2022 World Car of the Year awards, scoring a hat-trick of awards with the Hyundai IONIQ 5, which was also named the 2021 carsales Car of the Year.

The ground-breaking electric fastback SUV was not only named World Car of the Year, but Electric Vehicle of the Year and Car Design of the Year.

Completing an unprecedented sweep for the Korean car-maker, Hyundai’s chief creative officer – Luc Donckerwolke – had already been named as the 2022 World Car Person of the Year.

The WCOTY awards are decided by a global jury of 102 automotive journalists from 33 countries and were announced overnight at the 2022 New York motor show – the 17th time the show has hosted the announcement.

Hyundai’s domination left only three other World COTY awards for 2022. The Audi e-tron GT electric luxury car was named Performance Car of the Year, the Mercedes-Benz EQS electric limousine was chosen as Luxury Car of the Year, and the Toyota Yaris Cross was named as Urban Car of the Year.

The IONIQ 5 defeated its sister model, the Kia EV6, and the Mustang Mach-E to claim the EV award.

Marking the third time in four years that an electric vehicle has won the award (following the Volkswagen ID.4 in 2021, Jaguar I-PACE in 2019 and the original Nissan LEAF in 2011), the Hyundai IONIQ 5 beat 27 other contenders for the overall World COTY award, as well 10 rivals for the top EV gong.

To be eligible for the World COTY award, at least 10,000 vehicles must be produced between January 1, 2021, and March 30, 2022, and a vehicle must be sold in two major countries on at least two continents at a price below the luxury level.

“IONIQ 5 represents a pivotal achievement for us as we pioneer a new generation of smart mobility solutions. The pace of change at Hyundai will continue unabated through the rest of 2022 as we will soon be adding to our award-winning IONIQ range,” said Jaehoon Chang, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company.
