Hyundai has become a mega brand Down Under. The Korean brand breached the million car mark last week when a Perth customer took delivery of their new ix35 Active softroader (like the one pictured). Fittingly it was Hyundai's first Australian car dealer, John Hughes, which delivered the car – at 5.01pm on Wednesday, July 25.
The ix35 ticked Hyundai into seven figures, 26 years after the brand was introduced into Australia by a consortium including now-disgraced millionaire, Alan Bond. These days Hyundai's local operation is wholly company owned.
“We’re delighted that that the millionth new Hyundai was sold in the same city where it all began back in 1986,” Oliver Mann, Hyundai’s Marketing Director said in a company release.
“We will be sending our one millionth customer something special to share in our celebrations,” Mr Mann said.
Hyundai sold its 500,000th car in 2004. Hyundai Motor Company Australia boss Edward Lee said the company would aim to pass the 2.0m mark within ten years. The company has stated it intends to sell more than 93,000 cars this year.
HMCA sold a record 87,008 vehicles in 2011, equivalent to a market share of 8.6 per cent. The i30 has become the brand’s bestseller, with 28,869 units delivered last year.
As part of a millionth car test drive promotion across its network of 150 dealers, Hyundai gave away an i30. The winner was presented with the car during a celebration at the company's headquarters at West Ryde (NSW) last Friday.
Hyundai will seek to maintain interest in the millionth car celebration through August with a number of retail initiatives. Test drive participants will go into the running to win frequent flyer miles and purchases of a new Hyundai before the end of August will also receive a $1000 Myer Shopping Card.
Hyundai will also use the milestone to publicise the introduction of iCare Capped Price Servicing. Available on new Hyundai purchased by private and small business customers, the capped servicing applies for 50,000kms or 40 months. Rates range from $180 for the i20 through to $379 for the Santa Fe CRDi.
