Hyundai means business, too
Hyundai has unveiled its tilt at the van marketIs Hyundai gunning for VW, Benz, Toyota and the like? It seems so -- at least in the light commercial environment.
Released last week in South Korea, the Hyundai H-1 van will be called Starex in the company's home market. It goes into production in August (diesel version) of this year and around half of its projected 115,000-unit annual production will be exported.
Echoing the standard length Ford Transit, VW Transporter and Mercedes-Benz Vito in walk-though layout and styling, the H-1 is substantially bigger than the domestic model it replaces. Its wheelbase of 3200mm is up to 230mm shorter than the above models but the H-1 is a near-match in length (5125mm), width (1920mm) and height (1930mm).
Powered by the choice of Euro III and IV emissions-compliant turbodiesel engines or Hyundai's well-known 2.4-litre 'Theta' petrol engine, the H-1 gets a choice five speed manual or four-speed auto trannies. It will be built in both two to six-seater cargo and up to 12-person passenger versions.
No news yet on whether the van is coming Down Under. That said we'd be very surprised if it is not on Hyundai Australia's 'must have' list.
