Hyundai Palisade priced lower

But you’ll get less features at the entry level as Hyundai expands range with new mid-spec grade

The Hyundai Palisade range has been expanded with a new mid-spec Elite model grade that has in turned lowered the entry level to the large SUV range to $55,000 plus on-road costs – albeit with less equipment on offer.

The opening V6 petrol model was previously set at $60,000 plus ORCs, marking a $5000 reduction for the updated MY22 Hyundai Palisade due for release in September.

The new Elite model kicks in at $61,500 plus ORCs, while the flagship Highlander continues to start at $71,000 plus ORCs, but does pick up a few more features.

A turbo-diesel engine is also offered across the range for an extra $4000 – the same increment as before.

While the eight-seat-only base-grade Hyundai Palisade is cheaper and now gains a wireless phone charger, it loses its 12-speaker Infinity audio system and the driver talk function that allows front and rear seat communication.

The 10.25-inch central touch-screen has also been swapped for a smaller 8.0-inch unit and sat-nav is gone too, but Hyundai has emphasised that it still has three-zone automatic climate control, leather-appointed seats (power-operated for the driver), adaptive cruise control and 18-inch alloy wheels.

For the extra $1500, the mid-spec Palisade Elite can be had in seven- or eight-seat configuration and adds back satellite navigation via the bigger 10.25-inch touch-screen display and other features deleted from the base model.

A smart power tailgate, heated front seats, sunroof, tinted rear windows, dual LED headlights, LED tail-lights and 20-inch alloy wheels are also part of the package.

The top-spec Palisade Highlander continues to offer heated and cooled front and second-row seats, a head-up display and 360-degree parking camera system.

Extra features for MY22 Highlander variants include new-look 20-inch Calligraphy alloy wheels and body-coloured bumpers and side cladding, plus the option of black Nappa leather upholstery (in addition to beige and burgundy).

Six colours are available across the range: Abyss Black, White Cream, Steel Graphite, Sierra Burgundy, Moonlight Cloud and Rain Forest. Premium paint costs $695 extra on all colours except White Cream.

See below for full equipment levels across the model range.

There’s no change to the powertrains, which compromise a 3.8-litre V6 petrol engine (217kW/355Nm) and 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel (147kW/440Nm). Both combine with an eight-speed automatic transmission but the drivelines differ; the V6 petrol is front-drive only, while the diesel is AWD.

Key rivals for the Palisade include the top-selling Toyota Prado, the new Toyota Kluger, Mazda CX-9 and, not least of all, carsales’ 2020 Car of the Year and 2021 Best Family SUV, the Kia Sorento.
