Hyundai pips Holden, Mazda in June?

Hyundai's gain during June has come at the expense of Holden and Mazda, with those two brands straddling the 10,000-unit mark for the month. Holden pulled ahead of Mazda by nearly a thousand units for the month, but Mazda remains in second spot for the year to date.
Both companies sold fewer cars last month than in June 2012. Holden is still running out the VE Commodore, with VF production not set to commence prior to this month. Mazda's sales may have suffered with word of a new Mazda3 on the way – as we reported in May. But the nett sales difference last month, year on year, was about 150 fewer cars for Holden and 30 fewer for Mazda.
Hyundai sales in March placed it ahead of Holden, but behind Nissan, Mazda and Toyota, in reverse order. Nissan and Hyundai are both committed to displacing Mazda in the position of top-selling full-line importer in this country, but that would require a strong, sustained sales effort over the course of 12 months. So far, Mazda and Holden are jostling for second place in year to date sales, with Holden looking forward to the retail launch of VF Commodore to put some distance between it and Mazda.
Two other volume-selling companies that saw sales slip last month, year on year, were Kia (down around 300 units but still over 3000) and Volkswagen. Possibly reflecting press coverage in recent months, VW's sales dropped back from nearly 6500 in June 2012 to just over 5000 last month.
