Hyundai has confirmed it will recreate the 1974 Hyundai Pony Coupe as a new retro-based EV concept that celebrates its past as well as its current cutting-edge technology.
Originally unveiled at the 1974 Turin motor show, the show car no longer exists so Hyundai has recruited Italian design house GFG, which was founded by Giorgetto and Fabrizio Giugiaro, to help create the classic Hyundai with a modern twist.
Back in the 1970s, Giorgetto Giugiaro created five prototypes to reimagine what a Hyundai could look like, but it was the wedgy coupe concept that was most acclaimed, despite never reaching production.
Once revealed in Turin, the hugely influential Pony Coupe went on to shape Hyundai as an emerging independent car-maker.
Recently, the Pony Coupe is said to have inspired not only the wild Hyundai N Vision 74 concept but the production IONIQ 5 SUV.
Created from the ground up, expect both GFG and Hyundai to subtly update the original car’s styling, along with the addition of the modern guts.
It’s been tipped that other concepts could follow from the partnership.
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Giorgetto and Fabrizio to Seoul for this rare occasion and we look forward to collaborating with them and GFG Style on this extraordinary design project,” said Hyundai’s chief creative officer Luc Donckerwolke.
“Not only does this project hold historical value, but it also represents a cross-cultural exchange that could pave the way for more collaborations down the road.”
