Hyundai Australia has issued its first safety recall for 2015, involving the previous-generation FD i30 hatch and HD Elantra sedan due to the risk of steering loss.
According to Hyundai's recall notice: "Loss of power to the MDPS [motor driven power steering] will increase steering effort. If the defect occurs, the electronic power steering (EPS) lamp will be illuminated on the instrument panel.
"Without power steering the steering wheel can become heavy and additional effort is required to control the vehicle. The reduced control over the vehicle may pose a hazard to the driver, or other road users."
Models affected are the i30 and Elantra sold across Australia between November 1, 2009 and April 30, 2010. Vehicle identification numbers for affected i30 models range between KMHDC81TMAU064300 to KMHDC51TMAU267226, and for the Elantra they range between KMHDU41DAAU929998 and KMHDT41B9BU084665.
Hyundai will contact owners of affected vehicles by mail, advising them to make arrangements for either steering motor replacement or a software upgrade. Concerned owners can visit a Hyundai dealership to have their power-steering system inspected.
