Hyundai Australia is contacting the 882 owners of the Veloster+ sold between April and November of 2012 to have their vehicles checked for cracked sunroofs.
According to Bill Thomas, the importer's General Manager of Public Relations, the sunroof of each car may crack, due to a procedural problem during the manufacture of the cars. Seven local cases have been reported to date.
An “errant robot” (a loading robot) “malfunctioned slightly” says Mr Thomas, and incorrectly loaded the panoramic glass roofs before they were installed on the cars, damaging the structural integrity of the glass.
Mr Thomas says letters went out Friday of last week (January 25). The recall affects cars made between Nov 2011 and April 2012, Veloster +, but not turbo SR models. Less than 10 per cent of cars produced are affected.
The delayed response from the importer is due to the time required to establish how the fault occurred in the first place. Plus Mr Thomas says “We had a delay to ensure parts were ready to replace faulty ones”. It takes 10 minutes to inspect the cars at dealers and another 20 to replace the roofs, making a total of 30 minutes.
There is also a secondary recall issue that doesn’t affect Oz cars, says Mr Thomas. The handbrake can apparently jam in place with the wheels locked, but only in extremely cold weather.
“We will look at it” said Mr Thomas, but the PR exec remains doubtful there will be a local recall for it.
