Hyundai has produced the most powerful Tucson ever with help from US tuner Bisimoto Engineering, which has eked "more than 500kW" out of the Korean car-maker's 2.4-litre Theta four-cylinder petrol engine.
Created for this year's SEMA aftermarket and tuning show in Las Vegas from November 3, the piping-hot Tucson show car is the first SUV from Bisimoto Engineering, which teams with Hyundai for the fourth time.
The 'Brute Ute' follows last year’s high-output Sonata, which started with the same engine but ran on ethanol flex-fuel and incorporated strengthened internals, a high-boost turbocharger and upgraded engine management system.
Hyundai says the wildest ever Tucson was developed to combine "world-beating performance and technology into a brand-new, unexpected vehicle platform".
“The Tucson was the perfect platform for this year’s build, offering me the opportunity to captivate a wider audience by tapping into the growing popularity of the SUV market,” said Bisimoto Engineering owner and chief engineer Bisi Ezerioha.
“After hundreds of hours of testing and developing new engine components, we’re confident that this powerplant can handle what we’re asking from it, delivering a fresh, race-bred take on the Tucson with performance and reliability at its core.”
Hyundai's The 2.4-litre Theta engine is not available in Australia's Tucson, which comes with 1.6- and 2.0-litre petrol engines and a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel, the high-output version showcased here delivers about four times the power of the standard engine on which it's based.
Apart from the incredible power output, the Bisimoto-fettled Tucson features custom air suspension, white five-star race-spec wheels with sticky R-compound rubber, a full custom roll cage and “street fighter” exterior look dominated by a huge intercooler to replace the Tucson's standard grille.
