Hyundai Staria Load now Australia’s safest van

All-new Korean commercial usurps Toyota HiAce and Ford Transit in updated ANCAP van comparison report

ANCAP has updated and expanded its ‘Commercial Van Safety Comparison’ report to include analysis of the LDV Deliver 9, Hyundai Staria Load and revised assessments of the Mercedes-Benz Vito and Iveco Daily given they were updated following the release of the inaugural comparison report in December 2020.

The updated report is sure to be a handy one for potential van buyers, especially those looking to purchase a fleet given the Staria Load launched less than six months ago and just about rewrote the rulebook for van safety with its five-star rating under ANCAP’s latest testing protocol.

The LDV D9, meanwhile, also launched late in 2020 (October) to be tested and subsequently included in the initial comparison report, which named the Toyota HiAce and Ford Transit as the safest vans on the road.

Jump forward 14 months and it’s the all-new Hyundai that claims top honours, scoring the first-ever ‘Platinum’ ranking for the performance of its ADAS suite, besting the previously ‘Gold’-rated HiAce, Transit and now the Vito.

In terms of the other new additions, the LDV Deliver 9 and updated Iveco Daily only managed to earn themselves a ‘Bronze’ rating, meaning they trailed the rest of the medium and large van offerings save for the ‘Not Recommended’ Renault Trafic/Mitsubishi Express twins and the Renault Master.

“This analysis provides added value to fleet and commercial van operators as it extends beyond ANCAP’s traditional star rating program to shine a light on the active safety performance of an important segment,” ANCAP chief executive Carla Hoorweg said.

“Vans are a workplace. Their increased on-road exposure and frequent use in built-up urban areas means they interact with a large number of other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

“It is essential that fleet and van operators are aware of the crash avoidance capabilities and active safety features fitted to their vehicles.”

Hoorweg went on to praise the steadily growing number of vans being fitted with a suite of active safety features as standard.
