Hyundai Staria school bus doing the rounds

Bright yellow Staria Kinder seating up to 15 children is now doing school runs in South Korea

Hyundai has launched a very cute miniature school bus this week, based on the new 2021 Hyundai Staria people-mover and finished in a classic school bus yellow hue.

Decked out with roof-mounted light bars at either end and a stop sign that swings out from the driver’s door, the new Hyundai Staria Kinder, as it’s known, is now on sale in South Korea in 11-seat and 15-seat configurations.

All seats in the Staria Kinder include height-adjustable three-point seat belts as standard – to suit children of all sizes – while the driver is provided with belt and occupant seating confirmation alerts to ensure everyone on board is bucked up. Safety first, kids!

As you’d expect, there’s also plenty of standard safety and driver assistance equipment fitted standard, including autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane assist, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.

Unlike the (eight-seater) Staria now on sale Down Under, which offers the choice between a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel (130kW/430Nm) or 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine (200kW/331Nm), the Korean-market Kinder bus is powered by dedicated-LPG version of the latter which produces 176kW and 314Nm.

It combines with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In Korea, the Staria Kinder is priced from 34.78 million won ($A39,530) for the 11-seat model and 37.41m won ($A42,520) for the 15-seater version.

LPG powertrains are still used in a bid to reduce emissions and currently attract government subsidies worth $A8000.

According to the car-maker, there’s further savings of almost $A15,000 to be potentially made via a scrappage scheme also in place, which encourages owners of ageing vehicles to move into a new model.

“The Staria Kinder has achieved the highest level of safety performance by applying a large number of special components and intelligent safety technologies that have passed thorough safety tests,” a Hyundai spokesperson said.

“We look forward to moving children safely and comfortably with Kinder as a reliable school vehicle.”
