Hyundai has halved the levels of trim in its three-doored Veloster range – from four to two.
The rationalisation of the range sees a new entry-level model, badged as 'Veloster' only, positioned for price and specification somewhere between the two previous naturally-aspirated grades. Similarly, the previous forced-induction Veloster is now badged simply as 'Veloster SR Turbo'.
Both the new variants gain an upgraded touch screen, Apple CarPlay functionality and Android Google Now voice activation.
Hyundai has reduced the price of both models relative to the previous '+' specification, a reflection of the reshuffled equipment list, which sees "key features" retained from the higher grade, but some features put aside in the interest of keeping prices sharp.
The new atmo Veloster is priced from $29,590 – just $1060 less than the Veloster SR turbo at $30,650. Hyundai explains away the considerable price hike for the new entry-level model (measured against the previous base model) by pointing to the extra equipment – leather-upholstered seats, electric driver's seat adjustment, keyless entry/start, climate control, panoramic glass sunroof and fold-in electric mirrors with heating. Features removed from the base-model specification include satellite navigation, CD player and phone controls on the steering wheel, but that is offset to a large extent by CarPlay and Google Now.
Standard features for the Veloster SR Turbo, which is now over $4000 lower in price than the Veloster SR +, include Apple Carplay, panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control and electrically folding and heated side mirrors.
"These cars are superbly appointed," said Hyundai Motor Company Australia Director of Marketing, Oliver Mann.
"We have concentrated on the features our customers have told us they like the most. Keeping popular, high-value items such as the panoramic sunroof and leather-appointed upholstery has led to a sharper overall package for both Veloster models.
"Veloster is more than just a brilliant, unique, and surprisingly practical design – it is without doubt the best-value, best-equipped car in its class, now more than ever."
The changes to the Veloster range take effect immediately. Drivetrain variants remain standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed dual-clutch transmission for the 1.6-litre direct-injection four-cylinder in the base model, or the 1.6-litre turbocharged and direct-injected engine in Veloster SR Turbo. Output for the former is 103kW/167Nm and for the latter it's 150kW/265Nm.
Prices are as follows:
Veloster manual – $29,590
Veloster auto – $32,090
Veloster SR Turbo manual – $30,650
Veloster SR Turbo auto – $33,150
