The Hyundai Veloster N Performance Car concept was a surprise showing at the 2019 Seoul motor show, bringing an upgraded chassis, lighter weight and the sort of eye-candy that scars retinas forever.
Boasting an audacious new look underpinned by a carbon-fibre body kit, orange highlights and lightweight alloy wheels, the new model is roughly 30kg lighter than the standard Hyundai Veloster N.
While the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol 202kW/378Nm engine remains unchanged, the Korean company has fitted several up-spec chassis parts to the car, starting with lightweight OZ alloy wheels shod with Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tyres.
It's also been fitted with big six-piston Alcon brake calipers up front, with larger brake rotors for serious stopping power.
The hardcore Hyundai Veloster N Performance Car's braking and grip improvements are brought together via a lower suspension setup incorporating stiffer EXT Shock dampers.
Some of the stand out body mods include a new bonnet with Mazda3 MPS-inspired air scoop, orange mirrors, plus big-bore exhaust pipes with orange highlights and an audacious carbon-fibre rear wing and lower diffuser.
Take a gander inside and you'll see Sabelt bucket seats, suede steering wheel, unique gear shifter and more orange highlights than a mandarin growers' convention.
Hyundai's high-performance N division is serious about building its profile as a genuine contender to the likes of Nissan's NISMO division and the impending Toyota GR group, with plans to sell many of these parts in Korea – and potentially other parts of the world.
The Hyundai N performance sub-brand is also understood to be working on a ludicrous 300kW all-wheel drive hot hatch that could upset the status quo in the segment and take the fight to the likes of Mercedes-AMG.
Closer to home and the Hyundai i30 N hot hatch that is sold in Australia already has its own high-performance range of accessories in the form of N Option parts which were outed at the 2018 Paris motor show and are being evaluated for the Australian market.
At the present time the Hyundai Veloster N is not available in Australia but the brand's local arm is hopeful it can change this situation.
D.O. Kim, deputy general manager of the High Performance Vehicle Option team at Hyundai N told carsales.com.au in Seoul that the new Hyundai Veloster N Performance vehicle is a "concept show car" designed to showcase how owners can customise their cars with official parts.
"Some of these parts will be launched later this year," said Kim.
He explained the company was reviewing which parts will be offered but many of the Alcantara elements in the cabin are a certainty, as is the "rear diffuser and front skirt".
The final designs might be more mild than displayed on the show car, he cautioned.
Kim mentioned the Tucson is also in line for some extreme body work options but said they might be a while coming because the company has to wait until the range-topping Hyundai Tucson N launches, which will be the N division's first fettled all-wheel drive.
Asked if more power would be forthcoming from the turbo N engine, Kim stated: "In this case we did not touch the powertrain, but in future we can do that."
