Hyundai's new stand-alone Genesis premium brand will release both mid-size and large luxury SUVs by 2020, according to a document leaked by thekoreancarblog.com.
The apparently official 2020 Genesis model 'roadmap' published by the Korean website this week clearly shows the six new Genesis models that Hyundai late last year promised to deliver this decade.
They include the G90 limousine, which is already on sale in Korea as the EQ900 but won't be sold in Australia, this year's G90 large sedan (a facelifted version of our existing, sole Genesis model), and – by the end of 2017 -- the all-new mid-size G70 sedan to rival BMW's 3 Series.
Hyundai has also previously revealed that the other three Genesis models to be released by 2020 will comprise two SUVs and a sports coupe.
Now, however, if this roadmap is accurate it confirms the first Genesis to appear post-2017 will be a "Mid Luxury SUV", which is likely to be based on the large G80 "Mid Luxury Sedan" and similar in size to Hyundai's Santa Fe and BMW's X5.
It appears the second Genesis crossover to follow will be a smaller "Near Luxury SUV" based on the G70 "Near Luxury Sedan", which would likely be similar in size to the Hyundai Tucson and BMW X3.
The G70 and G80 have already been confirmed for Australia, and while the G80 will be revealed soon and arrives here early next year, the G70 won't arrive in local showrooms until the second half of 2017.
Genesis' all-new rival for not only the 3 Series, but the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, Jaguar XE, Lexus IS and Infiniti Q50 was previewed by the Genesis New York Concept in April (pictured), and should be revealed in final production form at either the Los Angeles show in November of the Detroit show next January.
As we've reported, if the local Hyundai operation gets its wish the G70 will be come here powered by a 270kW/510Nm 3.3-litre turbo-petrol V6.
There’s also a high-performance Genesis G70 N on the way to rival the Mercedes-AMG C 63, although a Hyundai Australia spokesman has told us "we don’t know whether it’ll be sedan or coupe or both”.
Although it's not clear whether it will wear the same badge, the G70 medium sedan also appears set to form the basis of a "Near Luxury Sport Coupe" from Genesis by 2020.
Likely to look more like the New York Concept sedan than the last year's Vision G Coupe concept, the G70-based coupe would be a belated successor for the Genesis Coupe never sold here, as well as a competitor – at least in terms of size – for mid-size coupes like the Lexus RC, BMW 4 Series and Audi A5.
Earlier this week Hyundai announced it has recruited SangYup Lee, Bentley's head of exterior and advanced design, as its new vice-president of styling.
"The most successful Korean designer in the global automotive industry will help the GENESIS brand establish its own design identity and enhance design competitiveness," said Hyundai.
