Hot on the heels of confirmation that Hyundai will offer its next-generation Genesis sedan with all-wheel drive for the first time comes the first spy image of the Korean brand’s redesigned large luxury sedan.
Captured here in an image published on a Korean website, the new Genesis sedan will be revealed in its domestic market by the end of this year and motoring.com.au understands it’s likely to top Hyundai’s local range as early as next year.
Seen in spy pics in April, the MkII Genesis four-door has been confirmed for right-hand drive production and, officially, remains under consideration for Australia.
News that it will debut in Korea ahead of the Detroit motor show in January, where it was widely expected to make its world debut, has led to speculation Hyundai may use North America’s biggest car show to unveil either a smaller Genesis model or the next-generation Genesis coupe, which has been confirmed for Australian release by2015.
The Genesis coupe was previewed by the Korean-designed HND-9 concept at the Seoul motor show in April (pictured in Silver), while the new Genesis sedan was pre-empted by the HCD-14 concept at the Detroit show in January (pictured in grey).
While the BMW 5 Series-size Genesis sedan is likely to continue with 5.0-litre V8 power, both rear-wheel drive Genesis models could be offered with the 270kW 3.3-litre turbocharged petrol V6 seen in the HND-9. That’s 10kW more power than the current Genesis R-Spec coupe’s 3.8-litre V6 (260kW/400Nm) and 66kW more than the existing 2.0-litre turbocharged Genesis 2.0T R-Spec coupe (204kW/372Nm).
Based on the new DH platform shared with sister company Kia's Quoris, both models are being developed at Germany’s Nurburgring circuit and will be available with either the existing eight-speed automatic transmission or a new 10-speed auto under development at Hyundai.
It is not yet clear whether the coupe will be available with the sedan’s new HTRAC all-wheel drive system.
