You can understand the appeal of Formula 1, even if you don’t watch it: the roaring engines, the high speeds, and classic podium champagne showers. But there’s something special about experiencing it firsthand that truly captivates and explains why people follow the sport worldwide.
Last month, I had the opportunity to hear those roaring engines come to life and leap off the screen at Albert Park in Melbourne, at my first F1 Grand Prix. Whether you’re heading to Melbourne in 2025 or flying overseas to experience a race at one of the world-class tracks, here’s everything you need to know for your inaugural Grand Prix experience.
Treat your entry pass like a golden ticket! Once your tickets are released, download them onto your phone, add them to your wallet, and ensure you have your ticket confirmation email saved to your files. Additionally, if you’re attending with someone else, send them the ticket in advance. Keep in mind that screenshots won’t suffice, so if you’re extra cautious, have a printed copy of them on hand. Australian GP tickets go on sale and sell out super fast so make sure you keep an eye out for when they go on sale.
Like concerts or festivals, I was under the assumption that outside food and water bottles weren’t allowed; however, you can bring a lunchbox full of snacks! As I was sitting in the grandstand, I was surprised to see a Ferrari-loving family next to me pull out sandwiches, snacks, and water bottles from their backpack.
Whether you’re trekking from Silverstone back to London or Albert Park back into the city by tram, expect a long and tiring journey home. Prepare yourself for slow train rides or lengthy waits for Ubers or taxis due to the large amount of people exiting the circuit.
Add fresh new pieces to your collection from the merchandise stalls. Each Grand Prix features several merchandise and memorabilia stalls, so you won’t need to wait in line for too long. Additionally, each team has their own stall, offering everything you need to support your favourite team from hats to apparel, keyrings and even baby bibs.
If you’re heading to Melbourne next year, you can find the same items at a pop-up merchandise shop in the heart of the CBD, as well as City Sports and F1 on Elizabeth Street. So, if you miss out because you’re running late or the lines were too long, then you have a backup plan.
No matter where you’re sitting, bring sunglasses and a cap. Throughout the day, the sun may beam into the grandstands or shine on the grass, meaning you need to stay hydrated and shaded. If you forget your hat, you can always purchase one representing your favourite team. Also as it is Melbourne, with its four seasons in one day, you will need to be prepared for any weather event.
