Spare a thought for emergency services personnel faced with the task of trying to contact your next of kin should you be unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident.
Almost every Australian carries around a mobile phone and each contains, on average, dozens of names and numbers saved to the phone, which, while relevant to us, make no sense to a third party who might be trying to contact our loved ones. Hence the ICE -- or In Case of Emergency -- campaign.
The concept of ICE is catching on quickly. The idea is that you save a person or persons who should be contacted during an emergency under the name ICE. For more than one contact, simply enter ICE1, ICE2, ICE3, etc.
Originally the idea was conceived by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents there was always a mobile phone with the patient, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought it would be of benefit to have a nationally recognised name for this purpose.
In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialling the number you have stored as ICE.
