With the electric 2027 BMW M3 having been previewed in near enough production form, the conversation has already pivoted to what the quad-motor sedan might look like as a coupe. This is especially relevant seeing as rumours have been swirling of the next-gen M4 being electric-only.

The BMW M Concept Neue Klasse is a striking beastie, but it’s even sexier as a two-door, so much so we no longer hold any major reservations about the next-gen M4 exclusively being offered as an EV.
Based on what we know about the M Concept Neue Klasse and the electric M3 (iM3, i3M?) it will birth, the next-gen M4 (iM4, i4M?) will pack north of 700kW from a quad-motor powertrain drawing current from a 100kWh-plus battery pack.
Rumour has it the powertrain could be good for more than 1000kW, a figure that’d make the electric M3/M4 duo the most powerful BMWs ever produced as well as two of the fastest.
Fake gear shifts, synthetic engine noise, variable all-wheel-drive and myriad other adjustable metrics should ensure authentic BMW M thrills behind the wheel – in case 700kW-plus isn’t exciting enough.

A new-generation and/or electric M4 is yet to be officially confirmed or even hinted at by BMW, but rumours and leaks dating back to late 2024/early 2025 have suggested the next M4 will be EV-only and not offered with an internal combustion option like the M3 will be.
We don’t know if those claims still hold water but in the scheme of things, we don’t have too long to wait to find out – we’d expect confirmation around the same time the next M3 debuts.
