Infiniti has quietly rolled its renamed model range into its three Australian dealerships ahead of this week’s launch of the Q50 prestige sedan. The use of the letter Q across the range is a nod to the Nissan-owned brand’s heritage, which launched in 1989 with the Q45 large car.
The M luxury sedan becomes the Q70, the G37 coupe and convertible are now called Q60 and the FX SUV has become the QX70.
Rebranding of models not sold here include the EX crossover as the QX50, the JX crossover as the QX60 and the large Y62 Patrol-based QX56 as the QX80.
Infiniti has also already announced its forthcoming compact hatchback will be dubbed Q30 and the crossover that spins from it will be called the QX30. The rebranding is almost complete, with only a few vehicles with the old naming policy still in local stock. Infiniti Australia will rebadge those cars for buyers if they make the request.
No product updates have been introduced with the new badges, although Infiniti Australia General Manager Campbell Yorke says an upgrade is coming for the QX70 in 2014.
“It will have some small little changes that will come out – mainly interior and light cosmetic works,” he confirmed. “There is some potential for us to have some wheel and other pack options available for some of those cars, but they are yet to be finalised.”
There are no updates planned for the Q60 or Q70 models in 2014.
Yorke said Infiniti has waited to promote the name change until the introduction of the Q50, the first all-new model launched since the brand’s September 2012 debut in Australia.
“From a communications perspective we haven’t focussed on the new naming,” he said. “We will get to that after we give Q50 its initial run. Q50 is really the great opportunity for us to talk about the new naming structure as well.”
