Infiniti gives another glimpse of retro racer concept
Pure-electric single-seater could hide future design direction for premium Japanese car-makerInfiniti has teased another two images of the retro racer-inspired concept it will unveil at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance later this month.
Following on from last year's Prototype 9 concept, which was also unveiled at the glamorous car show held in California, the latest concept appears to once again draw its inspiration from motorsport's past.
Giving us a glimpse of a single-seat race car, the latest concept will, Infiniti claims, "bridge the divide between new and old".
The unnamed Pebble Beach racer is also said to be the physical manifestation of the brand's electrified performance future.
That means that instead of lifting its powertrain from the Nissan LEAF like last year's Project 9, the latest concept is expected to come powered with twin electric motors offering real race car levels of acceleration.
Designed under the direction of Karim Habib, who styled both the 6 Series Gran Coupe and the last-generation 7 Series while working for BMW, the latest concept is thought to preview the future direction of Infiniti design.
Aside from that, no details have been given on the latest concept, but the V-shaped vent suggests a rear-mounted motor or battery pack.
Meanwhile, a four-point harness indicates that this pure-electric homage to a 1950s or 1960s racer will be track-focused and not suited to the road.
As with the Prototype 9, sadly, it's highly unlikely Infiniti will abandon its prestige and luxurious roots and push the latest concept into production.
Instead, its advanced powertrain could be re-used in a forthcoming flagship sports model, mostly likely a coupe.
Infiniti's decision to capitalise on its parent company Nissan's huge investment in pure-electric technology is a wise one given China's ever-increasing restrictions on the sale of petrol and diesel cars and forthcoming bans on combustion-powered vehicles in European city centres.
Previously, Infiniti has announced it will launch the first in a range of pure-electric vehicles in 2021.
