Infiniti readying S-Class rival

Luxury Japanese car-maker working on production version of Q80 Inspiration concept - will be powerful plug-in hybrid

Infiniti is secretly working on an all-new flagship that’s claimed will be a natural rival to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Almost certain to be inspired by the Q80 Inspiration Concept, that was revealed last year at the Paris motor show, the revelation that Infiniti is readying a luxury limo was revealed by an insider speaking to US-based newswire, Automotive News.

According to the source, much of the development has already begun at Nissan’s UK-based R&D centre in Cranfield, Bedfordshire.

The same source suggests that the new Infiniti limousine will be benchmarked against both the Mercedes S500 plug-in hybrid and Porsche’s Panamera E-Hybrid.

The source revealed that the Q80 will be powered by an all-new state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid powertrain developed by Infiniti itself. The new engine, said to be a 410kW twin-turbo 3.0-litre petrol is also being developed to have an electric-only range of at least 50km between charges.

The new Q80 is expected to be on sale as soon as 2018/2019. The Japanese S-Class rival could also herald the brand’s new semi-autonomous driving aids, coming with hands-free highway driving with lane-changing capability.
