Infiniti twin-turbo V6 set for Nissan 400Z

Instagram user catches Z Proto concept with bonnet open, showing 3.0-litre twin-turbo

As suspected, the hotly-anticipated all-new Nissan 400Z will come powered by the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 that lives under the bonnet of the Infiniti Q60.

Previously, Nissan had been cautious about confirming what powered the Z Proto concept, but thanks to Instagram user @layersworks, we now know for sure because the concept was caught with its bonnet up at a dealer in Tokyo.

Full details are still to be confirmed, but seeing the twin-turbo V6 in the near-production prototype of the Z35-series Nissan 400Z proves the new sports car will easily have enough firepower to challenge the latest Toyota GR Supra.

Under the bonnet of the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport, the 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, codenamed the VR30DDTT, produced 298kW and 475Nm of torque, suggesting that with light tuning the Nissan 400Z will easily humble the Toyota Supra's 250kW/500Nm.

Set to rev to a 7000rpm redline, the V6 engine will be combined with a six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching software. A seven-speed auto is also expected.

Against the auto-only Toyota GR Supra, the Nissan 400Z needs to beat the Toyota's impressive 0-100km/h benchmark of 4.3 seconds.

There's no word on how heavy the Z-car will be, but the new model will be based on the previous 370Z FM platform, albeit heavily tweaked and incorporating plenty of weight-saving measures.

Stay tuned, because Nissan plans to reveal the final production version later this year.
