Chinese EV-maker Human Horizons has launched what could become the world’s fastest-ever four-door with the unveiling of its wild 960kW triple-motor HiPhi A sedan ahead of its release in 2025.
Developed in co-operation with German hypercar-maker Apollo Automobil, the HiPhi A is based on the HiPhi Z sedan but gets an 800-volt electric architecture and incorporates batteries that can discharge a record 1.5 megaWatts (MW) of power at its peak.
The all-wheel drive triple-motor powertrain is also state-of-the-art, blending a single 320kW electric motor on the front axle and two further 320kW motors driving the rear wheels.
All three motors feature a novel carbon-fibre rotor design that enables them to spin up to an incredible 22,000rpm for more than 30 minutes at a time.
The result is a four-door fastback that sets the template for a new category of hyper-sedans, with the HiPhi A said to be capable of completing the 0-100km/h sprint in “just over 2 seconds” and topping out at a targeted 300km/h.
Those figures could make it quick and almost as fast as the voracious Tesla Model S Plaid, which is claimed to hit 97km/h (60mph) in 1.99 seconds and a top speed of 320km/h.
To cope with all that performance, the HiPhi A comes with carbon-ceramic brakes, aluminium wheels and other exotic materials like nano-ceramics and titanium to keep weight as low as possible.
No kerb weight figure has been released, but the Chinese EV brand does say the A sedan has perfect 50:50 weight distribution.
The fast four-door also gets agility-boosting rear-wheel steering, adaptive damping and torque vectoring, which are said to boost cornering performance by 15 per cent and braking by 10 per cent compared to the standard HiPhi Z sedan.
Unusual new tech includes screens on the rear suicide passenger doors that allows occupants to send messages to other road users.
Inside, the HiPhi A retains the creature comforts of the HiPhi Z, which means it comes with a huge infotainment system, 23-speaker stereo, Nappa leather seat trim and an advanced driver assist system that relies on an incredible 34 different sensors including LiDAR.
More details will be revealed following its debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show tomorrow (November 17).
HiPhi currently sells the HiPhi X SUV, HiPhi Y SUV and the HiPhi Z shooting brake in China. The brand recently gained a foothold in Europe by entering and selling its EVs in Germany. An expansion to other markets will follow and it could one day include Australia.
There’s no word yet on just how much the HiPhi A will cost, but in the German market the HiPhi Z costs €107,000 ($A178,500), and the faster version will command a healthy premium over the base vehicle.
Human Horizons isn’t the only Chinese car-maker attempting to usurp the Tesla Model S Plaid as the world’s fastest electric sedan.
Geely’s Zeekr brand recently unwrapped its quad-motor 917kW Zeekr 001 FR, which is claimed to hit 100km/h in just 2.37sec.
