Insight Hybrid tops Japanese sales

Honda becomes the first marque to top the sales charts with a hybrid

Honda's sharp pricing on its Insight Hybrid is paying handsome dividends, with the model becoming Japan's best selling new car after just three months on sale.

The Insight recorded 10,481 unit sales in April -- the first time a hybrid model has topped overall sales charts.

It marks a steep upward sales trajectory for the first four-door family hybrid to step on to the turf dominated for so long by Toyota's Prius.

In February, its first month on sale in Japan, the Insight recorded 4906 units, making it Japan's 10th best selling car.

In March this dropped to 21st, with sales of 4088 before crossing the 10,000 mark in April.
