The first fruits of Chrysler Group's rebirth are being racked up to arrive Down Under. Due next year, the Dodge brand's updated Caliber hatch will boast an all-new interior and a more refined turbodiesel powertrain.
The new engine is a 2.2-litre Mercedes-Benz sourced unit. Still matched to a six-speed manual gearbox, the 120kW/320Nm common rail turbodiesel replaces the 2.0-litre Volkswagen Audi Group pumpe duse powerplant previously featured.
Dodge claims the Euro 5-capable turbodiesel delivers 25 per cent more towing capability (1500kg) compared with the previous diesel variant, but (perhaps more importantly) also a significant improvement in refinement. The new engine features twin balance shafts and significant attention has been paid to improving sound attenuation under the bonnet, the carmaker says.
Dodge will continue to offer a 2.4-litre petrol as the entry-level Caliber engine locally.
The most obvious changes to the small car segment five-door are, ironically, on the inside -- in the cabin to be specific. Oft criticized for its interior design and execution, the Caliber gets an all-new interior for 2010.
Eschewing the hard edges of the original model, the new Caliber features a soft-form elevated centre console that is reminiscent of VW's Tiguan. High-spec models feature a large multi-function screen with what appears to be a soft key user interface. HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) controls are via three lower mounted dial controls -- also a VW trait. Other changes include modern multi-position vents and a soft-look dashpad.
Says Dodge: "An all-new designed instrument panel features a more integrated look and includes additional cubby space, center storage bin and larger climate controls. Bright satin silver accents add contrast to Dodge Caliber's interior design, while chromed accents brighten heating, ventilation and air conditioning vents, shift bezel, door handles and cluster rings. New door-trim panels and center console with armrest split-lid feature padded soft-touch materials for improved passenger comfort."
The new Caliber will make its public debut at this month's Frankfurt Motor Show.
Chrysler Jeep Dodge (CJD) Australia spokesperson Jerry Stamoulis told the Carsales Network the new interior is indicative of Dodge's cabin décor theme going forward. He dubbed the new model "a must have" for the brand.
"We don't have definitive timing on the new model's arrival but it will be here before the end of 2010," Stamoulis said.
"After the Chapter 11 plant closures we are very low on stock across all models, so we're keen to get the new-generation Caliber into our dealers as soon as possible. The sooner it gets here, the better," he stated.
The Caliber was the top-selling Chrysler Group vehicle outside North America in 2008.
