iPhone producer reveals Model V electric ute

Foxtron debuts its new pick-up concept alongside a fresh urban crossover in Taiwan

Two new electric vehicle concepts, including a one-tonne dual-cab electric ute, have been debuted in Taiwan by none other than Foxtron – the automotive division of Foxconn, which just so happens to produce the iPhone for Apple.

The vehicles in question are the Foxtron Model V and Foxtron Model B concepts, both of which were revealed at the Hon Hai Tech Day as a preview of the Taiwanese brand’s future product direction and as a showcase of what its ‘HHEV. OS architecture’ is capable of.

Billed as Taiwan’s first self-developed electric pick-up, the Model V is a dual-cab ute said to have a payload capacity of up to 1000kg and a maximum braked towing capacity of around 3000kg.

These figures put the Model V right on par with established segment heavyweights like the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton in terms of carrying capacity but behind the eight-ball when it comes to towing – not that 3000kg isn’t a decent number.

Visually the Model V looks like it could actually be a Peugeot, with a very similar lighting signature to the French brand’s current crop of SUVs, as well as a polished black grille.

The squinty aesthetic is paired with a vibrant sky-blue paint finish contrasted against by black alloy wheels, sidesteps and exterior trim, while the cabin looks especially tall from the side due to the raised bonnet and inherent lack of physical side mirrors.

Digital wing mirrors are also included on the Model B, which like its commercial stablemate looks decidedly European in its design with a full-width lighting signature, clean lines and fuss-free finer details.

Foxtron says the 4.2m-long crossover has a drag coefficient of just 0.26Cd and will cover up to 450km on a single charge.

Very few details as to either models’ powertrains have been announced so far, but other displays at the wider Hon Hai Tech Day event suggest both vehicles draw power from solid-state batteries developed in-house and are propelled by the brand’s next-generation electric motors.

“The rapid development of Hon Hai in the field of electric vehicles is a continuation of the Group’s growth and innovation,” Hon Hai founder Terry Gou said.

“In the past, we assisted global brand customers to transform the consumer electronics industry chain, step by step, providing consumers with extraordinary and affordable technology products.

“In the future, Hon Hai will certainly redefine the EV industry and provide drivers with safe and comfortable user experience in transportation.”

We don’t know yet if Foxtron plans to put either the Model V or the Model B into production, but the brand did confirm the bigger Foxtron Model C crossover would be launching in its native market in the second half of next year.
