Is this the face of the next-generation Toyota HiLux?

Leaked patent images could provide clues to the look of the new 2025 Toyota HiLux

The design of the next-generation 2025 Toyota HiLux may well have been previewed by fresh patent images leaked in the US.

These illustrations of the US-only 2024 Toyota Tacoma could provide the best indication yet of what the replacement for Australia’s best-selling new vehicle could look in as little as two years’ time.

While the Tacoma is slightly larger than the HiLux and has traditionally differed in design, the two are set to have much more in common next time round, with a shared TNGA-F ladder-frame architecture and even a common EV powertrain that was officially revealed in December.

Toyota has confirmed it will release all-electric versions of the HiLux and LandCruiser 300 Series by 2030, and the new HiLux is expected to emerge by 2025.

The latter is expected to share design cues with the larger new Toyota Tundra pick-up, locally converted versions of which are almost certain to become available in Australia in 2024.

Leveraging a version of the TNGA-F ladder frame that underpins the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series, the ninth-generation HiLux is set to embrace new diesel engine options – hopefully including the stump-pulling 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel V6 (227kW/700Nm) that debuted under the bonnet of the 300 Series.

A more efficient four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine is tipped to be the mainstay of the new HiLux range and it should out-perform the current 2.8-litre turbo-diesel (150kW/500Nm) that was introduced in 2014 and has been mired in controversy over faulty diesel particulate filters. This resulted in a costly class action that Toyota is now appealing.

Further afield, hybrid and even hydrogen fuel-cell versions of the dual-cab juggernaut are tipped to arrive.

The current version of the HiLux first debuted locally in 2015 and will be topped by the new GR Sport flagship later this year, but it will be one of the oldest utes on the market by the time it’s replaced.
