The humble people-mover is traditionally a family-oriented vehicle designed for school drop-offs. But not this one.
The new Lexus LM is a business-class luxury van that will put some private jets to shame.
This high-end people-mover made its world premiere at last week’s Shanghai motor show, brandishing a pair of reclining seats usually the reserve of first-class on commercial airliner and one of the biggest entertainment screens in the biz.
The driver is sealed off from the back seats via a large retractable glass partition, underneath which is an integrated 26-inch TV screen, which can presumably be hooked up to the internet. Ergo, you could watch videos of the LM, in the LM.
Buyers can opt for the traditional three-row, seven-seat layout but by doing so will miss out on a handy-dandy touch-screen control pad slotted between the two quilted leather-trimmed, power-adjustable seats, which recline far enough to enjoy a solid sleep.
Other features include a 14-litre fridge, 19-speaker audio system, double-glazed windows to reduce cabin noise while swing valve dampers – first used in the Lexus ES – are designed to deliver supple ride quality, allowing the Lexus LM to glide across all but the deepest of ruts in the road.
Power-operated sliding side doors and a completely remodeled cockpit with all the Lexus bells and whistles are standard. A built-in umbrella holder is part of the package too.
Available in both front- and all-wheel drive, there are two engine offerings, the LM 350 with a 3.5-litre petrol V6, or the LM 300h with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol-electric hybrid set-up.
Based on the Toyota Alphard luxury people-mover, the new Lexus LM will be available first in China, and top-shelf models could be priced as high as $A200,000 after import duties are added.
Lexus plans on selling the car in other Asian markets, but Australia is off the list.
A spokesperson for Lexus Australia said the new LM vehicle is "Not for our market".
The new Lexus LM is the fifth 'L' flagship model in the Japanese marque's line-up, after the LX large SUV, LS large sedan, LC super coupe and Lexus LY 650, a $5 million luxury motor yacht.
