Turin, the long-term seat of car-making for Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo, took the unusual step of making its single metro line and its 88 bus lines free on Thursday and Friday last week as part of a scheme to lower its particulate emissions.
Hemmed in by the Alps, the 360,000 residents of Turin last year suffered through the worst air pollution in Europe, as stated in two studies published in The Lancet.
Its 30.1 micrograms per cubic metre of PM2.5 micro particles were well above the EU’s recommended maximum of 25 and four times higher than the cleanest city, Stockholm.
Milan has its own pollution issues, though its scheme to reduce smog might be less successful. Its council chose to waive the joining and rental fees on its city-bike scheme, BikeMi, in the same week as the city was draped in heavy fog and sub-zero temperatures.
