Iveco has pulled the covers off an eye-catching LCV concept vehicle at the IAA commercial vehicle expo in Hannover, Germany.
Dubbed the 'Vision', Iveco says the project provides a new interpretation of the delivery van, combining hybrid power with an innovative electronic load management system.
The concept's name stems from the 360-degree visibility afforded to the driver courtesy of see-through A-pillars and the extensive use of glazed surfaces. A rear-view camera is linked to a panoramic screen at the top of the windscreen to give the driver an uninterrupted view behind, while the translucent roof adds to the sense of space.
The Vision adopts the Dual Energy technology concept it first revealed by Iveco at the 2012 IAA. This sees the vehicle rely on either electric drive or a hybrid engine for propulsion, the van automatically switching to the best system to suit any given driving environment.
Iveco says the Dual Energy system has the potential to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by as much as 25 per cent.
A tablet device provides an interface with the Vision's advanced electronics while the load management system uses a series of sensors to identify the goods being carried and their optimal positioning within the load bay.
Placing the load into these preferred locations also triggers the activation of 'containment devices' to secure the load, preventing any movement of larger packages once underway.
Iveco says the improved management of the load space also makes it easier and faster to load and unload the vehicle.
Iveco collaborated with a number of partners to produce the Vision. While Bosch, Dainese, Brembo, Streparava, Arcelor Mittal, CRF, Denso, FPT, Sole, Trucklite, Xperion and ZF were all involved in the Dual Energy aspect of the concept, Comftech, Essence and ST Microelectronics also played a role in the final concept's development.
An Iveco press statement says the concept serves as a test bed for future automotive technologies that could well benefit the commercial world.
"Iveco Vision is a laboratory for the study and development of new technological solutions and future modes of transport, which represent the natural evolution of Iveco’s light commercial vehicle range," it says.
The IAA expo continues until Thursday, October 2.
